Yesterday I made a quick birthday card for a friend of mine. Her birthday was nearly a month ago but everybody was too busy to graduate so we postponed the gift. A friend of my boyfriend made a really cute knitted key chain of a pink squid. She makes all kinds of cute knitted animals! After we received the awesome squid we went to town to buy a little box to give it the gift-unwrapping-feeling. We left the store with a jelly jar instead. Just the right size to put in the squid, plus it can swim and see its surroundings. So once it was accustomed to its new home I made some photo’s (see image 02) and I started drawing the card in Photoshop. Roughly 1 to 2 hours of work I created the squid while the squid created my friend’s name in less than a second. Guess the right current was flowing at that moment… I had so much fun creating this! It was a pleasure to create such a fun image.

So these are the end results of the last and longest project of this year. As I told before we got the assignment to make a book of illustrations. It could be a fairytale/story or just a plain book with different illustrations revolving around one theme. I choose a fairytale (see previous post ) and made three spreads in full color with a style that would be used to form this book if I would have the intention to publish the book. In the end I sort of failed since I held on to my manga style which is a big NO on a school for arts. But I’m quite happy about the whole outcome and I learned a lot during this project.

I was stuck. It gave me restless nights, so it was time to throw my plan B into the trashcan and get started on my first plan. I didn’t dare to come up with another anime/asian story and wanted to prove something. That I do love more than what lies other side of the world. But I needed a subject that was close to my heart. So I rewrote my story and with the lack of time that I created I began today on the new stuff I need for tomorrow. I got pretty far. But still too little to satisfy my teacher, for sure. It’s about the moon goddess Usagi. She’s lonely, decides to visit the earth. She arrives in front of a large gate, a torii. When she goes through she transforms to her appearance she holds in the day light which is a rabbit. She meets a dragon who warns her for humans who are ignorant for heavenly people. She discovers a house and finds a boy sitting on the porch while night falls. A fox noticed her presence and tries to eat her but fails. The boy wants to help the wounded rabbit and goes after her. He finds her between the bamboo forest and sees her true form in the moonlight. well, I guess you know how it ends.

I’m absolutely trapped. I have no outways. I’m stuck. I’m frustrated. I’m stressed. I’m going insane. We’re working on illustrating a book. It can me any kind of book as long it’s filled with your drawings. I decided to make one based on my book from childhood. It’s about a girl who is teased because she wears an eyepatch. When she runs away from school she comes across an real pirate and goes on adventure. The thing is, I can’t make my main character look NOT anime like. I should be around being half done with it but I only have a tiny portion of the entire work. I’m freaking out. I can’t make it work. This assignment is so important and I cut myself off at such a critical point.
The first image are all sketches I’ve made so far. The last one is not made by me. I drew over a photograph. The man is my dad, the girl is my niece. NO credit, just a filthy and ordinary fake drawing. I’m running out of ideas. I don’t trust my drawing skills.

Today was my last FunLab class and also the big exciting printing day. I had very low expectations from my print though I was curious to see how it turned out. I was really surprised when I saw she actually became quit nice. These past few weeks I worked in a program called Maya. Maya is a program which can make 3D objects. A 3D printer can actually make the Maya file into something physical. I never ever used Maya before and it was really hard to get used to the basics. The model in Maya was finally finished last week and was sent for printing. She is extremely fragile because she made out of plaster. I’m still trying to figure out a way to make it a little less breakable and maybe even paint able.
